PENTAGON, Washington D.C. — In a high-stakes press briefing Monday morning, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine provided the most detailed account yet of Operation Epic Fury, the U.S.-led campaign against the Iranian regime. Amidst confirming a rising death toll and the loss of three F-15 fighter jets to friendly fire, the Pentagon leaders emphasized that the mission remains “precise and unapologetic,” bolstered by a coalition of regional and global allies.

Casualty Report: The Fourth Service Member

The briefing opened with General Caine confirming that the U.S. death toll has risen to four. While three service members were killed in initial strikes over the weekend, a fourth succumbed to injuries Monday morning after a “squirter”—an Iranian projectile that bypassed air defenses—struck a fortified tactical operations center.

“We grieve with the families of these warriors,” Caine stated. “They represent the best of us, standing on the front lines against a regime that has waged a one-sided war against America for 47 years.”

The Kuwaiti “Friendly Fire” Incident

General Caine addressed the downing of three U.S. F-15E Strike Eagles over Kuwaiti airspace late Sunday. The jets were mistakenly targeted by Kuwaiti air defenses during a saturation attack by Iranian drones and missiles.

  • Status of Crew: All six crew members ejected safely and are in stable condition.
  • Response: Hegseth downplayed any rift with Kuwait, describing the event as a tragic consequence of the “fog of war” and praising Kuwaiti authorities for their immediate transparency and cooperation in the rescue of the pilots.

Alliance and Coalition Operations

Despite the incident in Kuwait, Hegseth highlighted the strength of the coalition. He noted that Israel remains the primary operational partner, with Israeli forces conducting simultaneous strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon and IRGC assets within Iran.

Beyond Israel, the Pentagon detailed support from several key allies:

  • The United Kingdom: British forces at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus successfully intercepted two Iranian drones targeting the base on Monday.
  • United Arab Emirates & Qatar: Both nations utilized their air defense systems to intercept Iranian missiles targeting American bases within their borders.
  • Saudi Arabia: While largely defensive, Saudi infrastructure has been targeted, leading to the temporary suspension of operations at the Ras Tanura refinery.

Military Strategy: “Not an Endless War”

Hegseth sought to distance the current operation from the “nation-building quagmires” of the past. He stated the mission is not about “democracy-building” but about “winning.”

“This is not Iraq. This is not endless,” Hegseth said. “We have a clear, devastating, decisive mission: destroy the missile threat, destroy the navy, and ensure ‘no nukes.’ The regime sure did change, and the world is better off for it.”

General Caine confirmed that the U.S. has established “local air superiority” over Iran, allowing B-2 stealth bombers to continue 37-hour round-trip missions from the U.S. mainland to drop “precision penetrating munitions” on deep-underground facilities.

Moving Forward

President Trump has indicated the assault could last four to five weeks. Hegseth concluded by warning Iran that any further retaliation would be met with “force far greater than what was witnessed tonight,” echoing the President’s recent directives.
